`I love Congaree National Park. There is no fee for the backcountry camping permit; just check in at the visitor center. What I love about it is that once I left the day hikers' trails and really set out into the backcountry (i.e. off-trail), I saw no one. For three days I wore no clothes at all, and no one was around to see me and complain -- even when I came out onto the river beach, no canoes or boats went by. Congaree is relatively flat, so if you need spectacular mountain scenery, it is not the place for you; but if you like being deep in forest, with huge, old-growth trees, it is paradise. Just be sure that if you are going to go nude, like I did, you pick a time when the mosquitoes are not out -- I did this trip in October and was not bothered at all; but having previously day-hiked there on a rainy day in summer -- oh, my goodness, the mosquitoes would have eaten me alive!
