`My risk-taking is too calculated for adrenaline. Climbing dried-up waterfalls is not an end in itself; it is a means of exploring further up or down river. Every rock face I climb is carefully chosen for being suitable for climbing without equipment, and if I reach a point where I deem it too risky to continue, I backtrack and either find another way, or decide that reaching the top is not important enough to risk my life. Laurnce Gonzales wrote a book and a column about "deep survival;" in one issue of that column, he points out that people die when they become too goal-oriented to turn back: the mountaneer who dies when the weather turns bad, when he ought to have retreated. I see no reason to cut short my adventures by becoming disabled or dead.
