Searching my roots in Poland I learned a little Polish and went to the Mormons to find a map showing the small community listed on my grandmother's birth certificate. I searched for and joined a group where you spend a month learning Polish at Jagellonian University. So I was put up in a student dorm. On the weekend I took a streetcar, train, then bus, to the small 4 corner community, saw a church spire - went there to ask the priest, in Polish, if I had any relatives still there. He yelled at me (in Polish) which I understood that I came here w/o an interpreter and I needed one! I could not understand the directions he gavee though to my relative. I wandered around and met someone who knew some English to direct me. There was NO ROAD there! You had to understand words like 'through a field, up a hill" etc. They had no phone and only just had installed a modern toillet. Their daughters were away in college in Paris and they were farmers. I ran to catch the last bus back to the dorm rather than stay overnight, although I was invited. It was fun! I am mostly English/Scotish - don't know any Polish or Polish customs from home -- maybe part of why I was interested. I also made trips to England and Scotland which were equally fun, but perhaps less unusual.
